Last Saturday I popped into Desai Fabrics, a fabric shop in Childs Hill, North London. I read about it on another blog and had no idea it was there. I’ve been past on the bus countless times but it just didn’t register on my sewing radar. Normally I can’t walk past a fabric shop or haberdashers without going in.
The shop is an Aladdin’s cave of fabric treasures and what’s more stocks one of my favourite fabrics, Liberty tana lawn. Liberty within a 1 mile radius of my house, O-M-G!!! I have a weakness for their gorgeous prints and have made quite a few items in tana lawn which I’ll be blog about in future posts.
Desai specialise in designer and high end fabrics from Italy, Switzerland and the UK. I fell in love with this duck egg blue satin from Valentino. Yes Valentino! The print is so good you can see every brush stroke but then it was £65 per meter.
They had Liberty tana lawn from the current collection as well as last seasons at discounted prices. Desai also stock lots of classic Liberty prints and a few older designs at very keen prices. I bought this quirky bicycle print tana lawn and it was only £12 per meter.
This compares well with Liberty’s remnant sale bin. I think it’s worth making the trip to North London if you are after some Liberty print or fabric for a special project. The shop has been going for 50 years and the staff really know their stuff. I’m surprised it’s not appeared on a list of London fabric shops. Now I know I can get Liberty fabric practically on my door step, I’m going to have to be extremely restrained whenever I pass by.
